Master Roberto Baptista
Headmaster of Origin Institute (1964-Present)
Master Roberto is the living torchbearer of our rich lineage in Traditional Chinese Martial Arts and Qigong. With over 45 years of experience, he is a direct disciple of Grand Master Chan Kwok Wai and other esteemed masters. Inducted into the Wushu Hall of Fame in 2000, Master Roberto has taught Qìgōng, Taichi, and Kungfu to countless students worldwide. As the Headmaster of Origin Institute, he preserves the essence of ancient wisdom while guiding students through transformative practices rooted in our traditional lineages. His dedication to the art extends beyond the martial arts realm, fostering spiritual growth, health, and balance for all practitioners.

Grand Master Chan Kwok Wai
Chén Guówěi (陳國偉)
Grand Master Chan (1936–2022) was a revered master of the lineage from which Master Roberto continues to teach. A highly respected figure in the world of Traditional Chinese Martial Arts, Master Chan dedicated his life to the study and transmission of
Qìgōng, Taichi, and, Kungfu. His teachings have influenced generations of martial artists, imparting both the technical skills and deep spiritual wisdom that are at the heart of the Origin Institute curriculum. Master Chan's legacy lives on through his students, who continue to honor his methods, teachings, and philosophy. His passing in 2019 marks the end of an era, but his profound impact on martial arts and spiritual growth endures.

Rooted in Shaolin Tradition
The lineage of Origin Institute traces its origins back to the 11th century Shaolin Temple, the birthplace of Shaolin Kung Fu and many foundational practices in Qìgōng and Taichi. This rich tradition has been preserved and passed down through generations of martial artists, including our Headmaster, Master Roberto Baptista. Our teachings are deeply rooted in the ancient wisdom of the Shaolin monks, combining martial arts with spiritual cultivation. This lineage represents not just physical or martial techniques, but a holistic approach to life — one that fosters health, balance, and spiritual growth.
A Living Tradition of Internal Cultivation
The practices taught at Origin Institute come from a long tradition of internal cultivation within Chinese martial arts and Qigong rooted in non-denominational universal wisdom.
For centuries, disciplines such as Qìgōng (气功), Tàijíquán (太极拳), and Traditional Chinese Martial Arts have been transmitted from teacher to student through direct practice, careful instruction, and long-term study. These arts were historically preserved within families, temples, and dedicated training communities where students developed not only physical skill, but also discipline, character, and spiritual maturity.
At Origin Institute, this tradition continues through the lineage carried by Master Roberto Baptista.
The Importance of Lineage
Within Traditional Chinese Martial Arts, lineage represents the continuity of knowledge passed from teacher to student across generations.
Lineage is not only a historical record. It is a living relationship between teachers and practitioners who carry forward the methods, principles, and ethics of the art that have been refined for hundreds of years.
Through this process of transmission, the deeper aspects of practice — posture, breath, intention, internal energy cultivation, and philosophical understanding — are preserved with integrity.
Students of the Institute participate in this living tradition by engaging in disciplined training and study under the guidance of qualified instructors.
The internal arts curriculum of the Origin Institute is overseen by Master Roberto Baptista, who serves as Professor and Dean of Traditional Chinese Martial Arts and Qìgōng (气功).
With more than four decades of dedicated training and teaching, Master Roberto has devoted his life to the study and transmission of classical martial arts and internal cultivation practices.
His training includes extensive study in traditional systems of Gōngfu (功夫), Tàijíquán (太极拳), and Qìgōng (气功). Over the course of his career, he has guided thousands of students and continues to carry forward the teachings he received from his own teachers.
Through his role at Origin Institute, Master Roberto ensures that the internal arts curriculum remains faithful to the principles and training methods that define authentic practice.
Lineage is preserved through practice and embodiment.
Students of Origin Institute follow a structured, multi-year pathway that introduces the foundations of internal cultivation gradually and with care — beginning with ethics and
ending nowhere, because the practice never stops deepening.
The curriculum integrates:
- Ethical Foundation (Dé 德)
- Qìgōng (氣功) & Internal Energy Cultivation
- Standing Meditation & Stillness Practices
- Tàijíquán (太極拳) & Other Martial Arts
- Dàoist Philosophy & Classical Principles
- Mindfulness, Meditation & Mind Cultivation
- Community, Live Practice & Ongoing Support
Through consistent practice, students develop the physical vitality, mental clarity, and ethical foundation required to carry these traditions forward in their own lives — and for those called to teach, to transmit them with integrity to others.
Origin Institute exists because one generation chose to pass these teachings to the next. That chain is unbroken — and it depends on practitioners who train with enough depth and sincerity to carry it forward.
As students progress through the curriculum, some are called to a deeper commitment: the Instructor's Path. This is not a weekend certification. It is a mentored process that includes advanced pedagogy, lineage study, ethics of teaching, and supervised practice — designed to produce instructors who carry authentic transmission, not diluted interpretation.
Our long-term vision: one certified instructor in every city worldwide. Each one trained by Master Roberto's lineage. Each one accountable to the same standards of Dé (德) that every student learns on Day One.
These practices survived the Chinese Cultural Revolution, when masters were persecuted and books were burned. They survived because practitioners memorized, trained in secret, and refused to let the transmission die.
Origin Institute honors that resilience by making these teachings accessible without compromising their depth. Through Master Roberto Baptista's 45+ years of authentic Shaolin lineage, a structured multi-year curriculum, and a global community connected through the Digital Monastery, the tradition continues to unfold — not as a museum piece, but as a living practice that meets you where you are and asks you to grow.
Students who enter Origin Temple become part of this lineage. Not as spectators, but as practitioners — contributing to a tradition that has been cultivated across generations and continues through the hands, breath, and discipline of those who train today.
